It is hard to believe that we look so far back, but reach so little forward. In the 60’s and the 70’s that was what America was about. The Friendship Nine was looking forward when they challenged White America and did jail time rather than pay their fine for trying to sit in the “White” section at a lunch counter. This was way back in 1961. Actually today January 31, 1961 and it seems so long ago. But it truly is just yesterday in the lives of those that remember this event.
This group of friends planned for months to attempt to sit in the “Whites-Only” section at a lunch counter. The police already knew about it and were there waiting to arrest the Friendship Nine and rather than pay the $100.00 bail to the system allowing the system to profit from their arrests, they chose to take the full 30 days punishment of incarceration doing hard labor.
The original attorney that defended the Friendship Nine takes the case before the the Court, presided by the nephew of the Judge that served for the original trial to have the charges cleared for these men.
Rather than listen to me chop this story to bits trying to tell you about it, you really should click the link above and read this story. The story itself tells a lot about the young men and women of that time, and celebrates their devotion today.
